Visitors often assume Berlin’s best months are July and August. The people who live here would mostly say otherwise. From September the city fills its calendar — museums open late, the marathon closes the middle of town, the landmarks are lit, and by late November the Christmas markets take over the squares.
The rhythm of it
September is the busiest month for events and the hardest for accommodation. Two things drive it: the marathon, which brings tens of thousands of runners and closes a wide central route for a day, and a run of cultural weekends — a museum night, a heritage day where buildings normally shut to the public open their doors, and an art week across the city’s galleries.
October brings the festival of lights, when facades and landmarks across the centre are lit with projections after dark. It is free, it is outdoors, and it is the one week of the year when a walk through Mitte in the evening is the whole plan.
November is quieter and better for anyone who came for the museums rather than the crowds. The jazz festival lands mid-month.
From late November the Christmas markets open, and they run into the new year.
What this means for booking
Three practical things, in order of how much money they save you.
- Book the marathon weekend early or avoid it. It is the single hardest weekend of the Berlin autumn to find a room in, and prices across the city reflect that.
- Check whether your dates sit inside a market. If they do, the squares near you will be busy in the evenings, which some people come for and others would rather avoid.
- Do not plan two major things in one day. Berlin’s centre is walkable but the events are spread across districts, and an evening event after a full day of museums is more travel than it looks on a map.
