Staying in Prenzlauer Berg

Prenzlauer Berg is the Berlin most people picture before they arrive: five-storey Altbau buildings with tall windows, cobbled side streets, and a café on the corner that is busy from nine in the morning. It came through the war better than most of the city, so the streets still look like the century they were built in.

Sundays are the argument for staying here. The Mauerpark flea market fills the slope, someone sets up karaoke in the old amphitheatre, and the whole district takes the day slowly. The rest of the week it is calm, green and residential — a fifteen-minute ride from the middle of town and a world away from it.
