Mitte

The historic centre, and the shortest walk to almost everything.

The neighbourhood

Staying in Mitte

Mitte is the Berlin that arrives on postcards: Museum Island in the river, Unter den Linden running west to the Brandenburger Tor, and the television tower standing over all of it. It is the most convenient place in the city to stay and makes no apology for it.

The trick is knowing where the centre stops being a monument and starts being a neighbourhood. Walk north of the Spree into the courtyards around Hackescher Markt, or east towards Torstraße, and the crowds thin out within a block. Breakfast is unhurried, the galleries are free to walk into, and everything else is a few U-Bahn stops away.
